The Diving Bell and the Butterfly:
Wow, what a film… An incredibly moving film about a man who is paralysed, except for his left eye, after a stroke.
It is based on the true story of the man who is paralysed, written by him too. The film shows how he wrote the book, and how he lived. A review on imdb says that this film was not depressing, but, I would have to disagree.
I did find it incredibly sad, but also very very well done. I think it really portrayed the ‘lock-in syndrome’ that man has well.
When he manages to formulate his first actual sentence, it really was quite a scene. You’ll know it when you see it, I’m sure.
I just found one annoyance in the film – the subtitles mentioned seemingly random letters, while viewing in English, and the sentences generated seemed to have nothing to do with what he had said. IÂ don’t think it would’ve really spoilt the translation by describing what he was saying in French, with a subsequent English translation.
I give it 9/10
