Movie: Bugsy Malone (1976)

Bugsy Malone:

Well, this was a fun movie – made for kids, with an all child cast, but it’s in the top 250, so it was on the list. I’m surprised I’ve never come across it before on TV as a child.
Jodie Foster was recognisable quite easily – and she was the only actor/actress that I did recognise – looks like most of them did not continue their careers in acting, if IMDB is anything to go by. Which is a shame, as the acting in this film really was very good! Well, at least they probably enjoyed making the movie.
Bugsy Malone came out in the same year as Taxi – so that is two films with Jodie Foster in that are on the IMDB top 250 from the same year.
The actual story to this movie was amusing – basically there is a new weapon out that is faster and more accurate than the pies that were the previous weapon. The splurge gun. It’s set in a mafia/mob environment.
Bugsy is a ‘nice guy’ as narrated at the beginning of the movie, and ends up helping Fat Sam who is being pushed out, because he doesn’t have any splurge guns and has to rely on the old hardware – pies thrown by hand.
It had some excellent touches in the movie, but, I wasn’t too keen on a lot of the songs – though the dubbing on the songs did amuse me. Adults singing over lip-syncing kids just seemed a bit silly.

I did enjoy this movie, so it gets a 7/10. Would’ve been higher if not for some of the songs.
