I think this is the oldest movie I’ve seen in the IMDB top 250 so far. It’s a sci-fi story set in a world where the rich have a great city, while the workers who keep the city running live underground.
According to the introduction to the film, around a quarter of the original film stock has been lost. Some of the scenes have had to be replaced with text descriptions, or made up with copies of the film, which seems a bit of a shame.
It is a classic – but, because I’m not very used to silent movies, I found it a bit odd – as I kept expecting more description frames to let me know what was going on.
I also found the numbers of extras insane – there were hundreds, if not more, for some really large scenes.
It’s worth watching, but, it might be a little difficult to follow at times.
I give it 7/10.
