So, the first sequel to the new Star Trek films by JJ Abrams. Kept me intrigued most of the time, though there were fairly slow bits that seemed slow for no purpose, as well as fairly predictable outcomes to some plot points.
Possibly a bit of a spoiler – but it’s early, so I’m going to go with it. I never really understood why the father did what he did. If anyone who reads this can explain how he was coerced into doing what he did, and not taking another action, then go ahead. I’m not convinced with “it was for the kid”.
The action scenes were pretty spectacular – mostly the actual combat ones. The space combat scene(s) – felt a bit disappointing.
Even with all this disappointment, the acting was pretty damn good, especially Benedict Cumberbatch – I’d say it was the actor as well as the script/role he had in the film.
The Uhura/Spock relationship was a bit tiring. Considering they’d probably been together for a long time, and presumably had become used to each other’s ‘quirks’ by now.
Still, fun to watch. Especially when you work out who the actual villain really is, bringing the intrigue up just that little bit more.
I give it 7/10
