Movie: Downfall (2004)

Downfall:

This was an interesting film for me. I had no idea that it was actually rooted in reality quite heavily. It seemed to have little of the normal extra sensationalism that tends to be added to movies to make them more ‘cool’.

Even though I didn’t think Hitler was as crazy as he was made out to be in this film, the portrayal is no doubt more accurate than his image in my mind. I should probably qualify the ‘crazy’ comment – I mean, yes, he was crazy at trying to eliminate huge numbers of people, and his goal to take over the world – but, in the film, he came across as insane, and to me, unable to ever get to that kind of position. Though, the film was about his final few days, not how he started and gained power. I don’t understand how/why people still stuck with him right to the end – to me, it wasn’t obvious from the film, especially with the generals obviously embarrassed at Hitler’s orders.

The scenes of destruction were extremely well done. The breakdown of society – normally you see images of the other side – of the destruction that the Nazis had done to other cities, not what the Allies had done to Nazi strongholds. And to see Berlin in ruins was a change – at least for me.

Eva seemed detached from reality, but, I know so little of her from history, I have no idea if that is actually like her. It just seemed a bit off.

Even with all these minor things. The control that Hitler had was still amazing to see. The cruelty of his mind was clear to see. It’s just crazy to think that these people had so much power in the first place, and how crazy they still were in the face of defeat.

I give it 9/10
