Movie: Ikiru (1952)

Ikiru:

It’s been a few days since I watched this film. I was hoping in that time I would’ve figured out a way to describe it.

This film is about a man, who finds out early on in the film that he has cancer. It is a shock to his whole way of life, and he rebels against it.

In the first few days, he meets an author, who tries to show him how to ‘live life’. It doesn’t really seem to work.

He has a grown up son, one who he seems to not have much contact, even though they live in the same house. It appears as though the son resents the father, but, I’m not totally sure about that.

Another interesting part of this film – though only made in 1952, I found it very interesting how westernised the fashions were in the film – the office workers wore suits and ties, the women, skirts, blouses, and tights. The last few Japanese films I’ve watched have been based around the times of samurai’s and feudal lords, so it was quite a change to see this!

I found this film a very emotional ride, and a very good film.

I give it 10/10
