Nights of Cabiria: I did not realise this film was made by the same director who made La Dolce Vita – a film that I didn’t like very much at all (in hindsight, I’d now probably give it at least 5/10). This film follows the days and nights of a prostitute in/near Rome. In the […]
Movie: Cocoon (1985)
Cocoon: I actually saw this closer to a month ago – on a flight over to the US. I had always assumed this was a ‘serious’ sci-fi film, but, it was actually quite lighthearted, and comedic at times. I am not sure I got the full experience of the film, but, I did enjoy it. Also, […]
Movie: The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre: A true classic. Scenes in this movie strongly reminded me of ‘Wages of Fear‘. I suppose being only 5 years apart might explain some of that. The movie is about a couple of not particularly smart homeless guys in what I assume is Tampico, Mexico. They get an idea […]
Movie: In the Loop (2009)
In the Loop: A Steve Coogan film. I saw this on a flight from the UK to the US. I was sorely disappointed. I had no idea it was done in a documentary style, a la The Office, but, in a much worse way, in my opinion. I didn’t really follow the point of the plot too well, […]
Movie: Annie Hall (1977)
Annie Hall: How do you describe this film? I’ve a bit of a love/hate relationship with Woody Allen’s films. In fact, I find him frustrating to watch on screen at times. I found him frustrating to watch on screen in this movie at times too. But, that didn’t stop me enjoying this movie immensely. His […]
Movie: It Happened One Night (1934)
It Happened One Night: A comedy. Very good. Not much else to add to this. Except that it’s simply excellent, and must be watched by all! The humour may be predictable at times, but, it’s simply a very well done film. I give it 10/10
Movie: Wages of Fear (1953)
Wages of Fear: This was an odd film – I found it painfully slow for the first half, and also incredibly slow during the latter half at times. The film is centred on a bunch of Europeans (or at the least, non South Americans) in a South American town trying to survive in a place […]
Movie: Yojimbo (1961)
Yojimbo: A film about a samurai who happens to come to a small town that has a feud going on between two criminals. Instead of moving on when suggested, he decides to stick around and play the criminal gangs off against each other. It’s a very good movie, and has a reasonable pace. I understand that […]
Movie: Prince Mononoke (1997)
Princess Mononoke: A Japanese animation of top quality again. Surreal, but, that kind of goes without saying. The story was very good, the characters likable, and the action interesting. Very much worth a watch. I watched it with English dubbing. I give it 9/10.
Movie: Once Upon a Time in America (1984)
Once Upon a Time in America: A bit of an epic, this. At 220 minutes long, it felt like an epic too. A film following the lives of a bunch of childhood friends. Mostly concentrating on two – the characters played by Robert De Niro and James Woods. It was another relatively complicated story line, […]
